Summer has arrived, and the time to spend lazy days under the sun or in the cooling waters of a pool has arrived. But where exactly should you plan to spend your leisure time this summer? Luckily, there is an abundance of great recreation options to keep in mind this season. Let’s take a look at six local summer spots to enjoy!
Pool at Miller Park
Beginning June 8th and continuing until August 11th, the Miller Park Pool is open daily. Its regular operating hours during this time is 1PM through 6PM Saturdays through Thursdays and 1PM through 7PM on Fridays. This is a great place whether you’re headed out on your own or have a family to take along as it offers an impressive array of family-friendly and special needs friendly activities. It also boasts a concession stand serving snacks and drinks.
Spray Park at Riverside Park
Are you on a budget this summer? Don’t worry if so – Spray Park at Riverside Park has you covered. Open from 10AM to 8PM daily (although hours are subject to change, so check before you head out), this fun spot offers a number of “Splash Pads” that run a variety of sequences like Flower Shower, Ride & Spray Zebra, and Water Weave every three minutes. Note that children under 13 years of age need to be supervised by an adult at all times and no street clothes or shoes are allowed in the wet area.
Yoder’s Farm (Rustburg)
Maybe swimming isn’t your idea of a great summer day – that’s okay! There are options for more leisurely (and dry) activities, too. Yoder’s Farm offers families a great opportunity to spend time exploring while learning about everything farms have to offer. And when you’re ready to head home, you can bring some fresh produce with you! Yoder’s Farm is open from 10AM to 5:30PM Tuesday through Friday and from 10AM to 2PM on Saturday. The farm is closed on Monday and Sunday.
Johnson’s Orchards _ Blue Ridge Parkway _ Peaks of Otter Lodge (Bedford)
If you’d like to get away from the city for a bit and enjoy some beautiful hiking trails and lake views, you might enjoy visiting the Peaks of Otter Lodge. The lodge is located on a scenic river and is surrounded by many different activities that are fun for the whole family. Its close to Johnson’s Orchards as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway, too. Make your weekend a trifecta by visiting all three spots!
Why not spend some time at the ballpark this summer? The Hillcats play games throughout the season and the stadium offers a variety of fun themed nights with fireworks and tasty summer treats. This is a great option for groups of all sizes.
Tubing, Canoeing and Kayaking down the James River
If you find the summer heat a bit too much, come enjoy the James River! Whether you want to leisurely tube down the winding banks or would prefer to take a more active role and try your hand at kayaking or canoeing, the river has something for you.
